Mosman’s Elegant Lighthouse

Rosherville Lighthouse aka Parriwi Head Lighthouse

Since 1911

Hidden in the bush on Parriwi Road Mosman and overlooking Middle Harbour is the delightful Parriwi Head Lighthouse (aka Rosherville Lighthouse). The lighthouse was constructed in 1911 and is still active. It is said to be designed by Maurice Festu in a style referred to as “Disney Castle”, a perfect way to describe it!

This walk incorporates the lighthouse and the foreshore below, as well as Rosherville Reserve and some of the surrounding streets. If you have the energy for more walking, Parriwi Park above Parriwi Rd has expansive views over The Spit Bridge area.

Circular Walking Route 1.0 – 1.5 hours

I recommend planning this walk to coincide with a low tide so that you can also explore the foreshore below the lighthouse. Steps lead down from the lighthouse to a small beach where you can turn left to find colourful rocks, intricate sandstone erosions and large boulders covered in a bright green sea moss. Sea moss is a type of algae, which has been part of the human diet for thousands of years. In addition to being consumed historically in places like the Caribbean and Ireland, sea moss has been used medicinally in other cultures for decades, to treat conditions ranging from coughs and infections to low libido… I wasn’t tempted to try it 🙂

You need to follow the foreshore back toward Chinamans Beach before the tide changes. There you will find stairs that lead to McLean Cres and Rosherville Reserve. Cross over Rosherville Reserve to a small bush track that takes you up to Rosherville Rd and Hopetoun Ave (alternatively take the shortcut track at the end of McLean Cres). From here you can follow the map provided to work your way back to Parriwi Rd. There are also some beautiful homes and gardens to see on Kiora Ave and Fairfax Rd (dotted on the map).

Getting there: Car or bus to The Spit or Parriwi Rd.

If you have energy for a further exploration, follow Parriwi Rd past the lighthouse until you reach the stairs up to the Parriwi Park (pictured below). At the end of the bush track (dotted on map) after passing rustic Freestone Hall, there are brilliant water views over The Spit.
